Paul Simon Playlist

Paul Simon has travelled many paths in the last 40 years (not the least of which was marrying both Princess Leia and flower child Edie Brickell) - and taken me from Bookends and Bridge Over Troubled Water blasting from my sisters' room when I was a kid, to my infatuation with his string of early 70's AM hits, to an intimate 1981 concert with 500,000 of my closest friends in Central Park (hello K.C.), through the highly eclectic and wildly succesful Graceland and its subsequent triumphant tour (hello Marie), on through to the stink bomb that was Songs From The Capeman and now to his elevated status as senior statesmen and magi to a new breed of americana savants and sweet soft rockers. Here's a playlist comprising mostly cover versions from the new breed and a couple of orignal tunes by Simon acolytes.

Country songwriter and Steve Earle sidekick Darrell Scott covers "American Tune" on his new album "Modern Hymns," out tomorrow. It's a great cover, too, moving the song in an unexpected bluegrass.
