TK #9: Roman Candle – Oh Tall Tree in the Ear (2009)

Here’s why modern radio isn’t A-OK with me: This band isn’t on it. And here’s evidence that we’re in a new world where consensus is laid to rest and what’s classic lies solely in the ears of the listener: It would be just the mildest hyperbole to say that no one has heard this album. But around here, these three North Carolinians are titans, sitting comfortably with the artists resting at spots 10 and 11. They have everything – sturdy songs, tight arrangements, wit, soul, smarts, and a keening tenor that transforms songs about small subjects into low-key anthems. You can hear the echo of the history of rural American music in these songs, but mostly what you hear is as fine an indie rock and roll band imaginable at the decade’s end.

This is a HUGE stretch. Oh Tall Tree wasn't even the 9th best album of 2009. Nice but almost immediately forgettable.

I think the lyrics alone put this record into the top 10. Then when you add the incredible melodies and shear songcraft, this is a no-brainer. Great selection here, and yes its sad more folks haven't heard this record.

Nice to see this album get such high praise. I think you'll find more than a few people out here that would rank it as high.

Wow, I don't know if this ranks in the top ten from last year and you have it in ninth for the decade.

Again, great list guys. I could quibble with you over the placement of this album, but mostly I'm thankful that there are people out there who recognize the greatness of this band. #9 or #90? Who cares? But I very much want people to hear this music, and I'm glad that you're reocgnizing it.

Great pick guys! This is one of my absolute favorites of 2009. Great to see such strong support for it here!

I love this list — not every selection but the effort and passion and fun and good writing and wheat-from-the-chaff of it. Thanks to both of you.

Also, am I a jackass (I know the knee-jerk response from most of you so can it right here) for thinking that anonymous comments on a blog are, well, twelve-ish?
